Wednesday 20th July 2022 – Newcastle Cathedral

The Empty Bowls event returns to Newcastle on Wednesday 20th of July at Café 16 inside Newcastle Cathedral. Organised by local Community Interest Company The Clay Team and local Charity the Oswin Project. Unique bowls have been made and donated by Potters from across the region to support the event in aid of local food charities; the People’s Kitchen and Men’s Pie Club.
Visitors are invited to choose a bowl to fill with a delicious vegan and gluten-free Chilli. They can dine in the Cathedral’s beautiful refectory, after which a volunteer from the Clay Team will clean the bowl allowing diners to take home these one-off pieces to remember the event.
The Empty Bowls project is inspired by the first such event in a Michigan high school in the 1990’s, seeking to raise funds for a food drive. Students made ceramic bowls, served a meal of soup and bread, and invited guests to keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world. It has now spread across the world, with events in lots of different countries, and we are proud to run this event right here in the Northeast.
