“
I volunteer for the Oswin project as they are giving invaluable opportunities to those who have been less fortunate in life. I truly believe that they are doing the best for everyone that works for them and every member of staff has been so friendly and welcoming.

“
The Oswin Project provides a much-needed lifeline for those who want to make a better life for themselves and their families once they have left prison. I have volunteered in both the prison kitchen and Café 16 at Newcastle Cathedral. The staff who work in both establishments are among the kindest and friendliest people I know.
— Penny, who volunteers in Cafe 16
What we need help with
Cafe 16
We are currently looking for some extra help in our Cafe 16s both in HMP Northumberland and in Newcastle Cathedral. In HMP Northumberland you will need to complete a security clearance and undergo training in order to become a ‘key holder’.
Core Charity
We are looking for volunteers to help with day-to-day admin.
Inside & Out
Our ‘Inside & Out’ team have large jobs coming up and would welcome volunteers, particularly those with experience in: building work, painting and decorating.
Volunteering with a Criminal Record
Having a Criminal Record is not a barrier to volunteering with The Oswin Project, we think people who have experienced the Criminal Justice System have a lot to offer, and we would value any time you could give us, especially if you were interested in working in this sector.
We often ask potential Oswinners to volunteer with one of our teams for a couple of days when they first join the charity. We cover your expenses and it helps us get to know you, and lets you find out more about the charity and how we might be able to help you. We have people volunteering in the office, in Café 16 in the Cathedral and with the ‘Inside & Out’ Team.
Volunteering without a Criminal Record
We have lots of opportunities for people without criminal records to volunteer. Some volunteers become ‘keyholders’ and help us in our Café inside HMP Northumberland, others offer support through mentoring, and help us with events or office admin.
