Despite the grey skies and persistent drizzle, our team wasn’t going to let a bit of British weather dampen their spirits! On Saturday, our bike mechanics from our bike shop at HMP Northumberland ventured out from their usual workshop to set up at Lesbury community shop, offering free winter safety checks to local cyclists. It was a chance for our team to bring their expertise directly to the community, and the response was fantastic.
A Busy Day in the Saddle
Over the course of the day, our two mechanics worked through an impressive 22 bikes, carrying out thorough winter safety inspections. The team didn’t just stop at inspections. They performed a range of minor repairs on the spot, including:
- Adjusting brakes to ensure reliable stopping power
- Fine-tuning gears for smooth shifting
- Replacing worn chains
- Fitting new inner tubes
Skills in Action
For our mechanics, who typically work in the warmth and shelter of our bike shop at HMP Northumberland, this was an opportunity to take their skills into the community setting. It’s one thing to repair bikes in a workshop, but quite another to work efficiently in a pop-up setting with the British weather doing its worst!
Events like this demonstrate the real-world value of the training and experience our team develops. Every bike checked, every brake adjusted, every chain replaced, these are practical skills making a genuine difference to people’s lives and their ability to get around safely this winter. We’re proud of our mechanics for their dedication and expertise, and grateful to Lesbury community shop for hosting us. Here’s to keeping the community cycling safely through winter!
