Market Gardens in HMP Northumberland

Within the perimeter of HMP Northumberland lies a thriving horticultural haven where serving prisoners cultivate skills, plants and produce. Our Market Gardens feature polytunnels, greenhouses and a productive orchard—all providing the perfect environment for learning and renewal. Through the Market Gardens, the Oswin Project continues to nurture not just plants, but potential — creating employment opportunities while producing quality, sustainable products for our community.

Garden Furniture Workshop

Adjacent to our gardens, our woodworking workshop creates beautiful, durable garden furniture using recycled wood. Each piece represents both environmental responsibility and the craftsmanship of the prisoners working there.

From Seeds to Skills

The Market Gardens serve as both a training facility and a therapeutic space where prisoners learn:

  • Professional horticulture techniques
  • Sustainable growing practices
  • Plant propagation and care
  • Harvest management and crop rotation
  • Commercial growing standards

This calming environment promotes concentration, patience, and responsibility — qualities that extend far beyond gardening.

Harvesting Purpose

Under The Oswin Project’s guidance, these gardens have flourished into a vibrant enterprise with meaningful yield. What was once primarily a training ground now produces exceptional crops that benefit our wider community through:

  • Our Farm Shop, where customers can purchase fresh, locally grown produce
  • Both Café 16 locations, which incorporate garden-fresh ingredients in their menus
  • Employment in commercial horticulture for participants approaching release

This complete cycle—from seed to sale to social impact—creates purpose at every stage of growth.

Our Growing Range

Our seasonal offerings include:

  • Vibrant flowering plants and bedding
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Culinary and decorative herbs
  • Heritage varieties of plants and vegatables
  • Seasonal specialties and starter plants for gardens

All products are grown with care and commitment, reflecting the pride our participants take in their work.
