The North East Needs More Support: New MoJ Data Confirms What We See Daily

As a North East charity working directly with people in prison and those who have been released, the latest Ministry of Justice employment statistics hit close to home. They confirm the challenges we face every day.

The North East is lowest across all employment measures with just 13.0% in employment at 6 weeks post-release and 20.8% at 6 months. The national average is: 20.1% at 6 weeks, 34.5% at 6 months. Wales leads at 28.7% – more than double that of the North East.

Overall national trends are improving. The data shows that longer-term support works, enabling employment rates to rise significantly at 6 months. Community sentences also show strong outcomes (45.8% employment rate)

Every day at Oswin Project, we recognise the potential in the people we support. These statistics are not just numbers; they represent the individuals we work with who face the dual barrier of having been in prison coupled with the North East’s challenging job market.

The data shows that with the right support and time employment outcomes improve dramatically. This reinforces why our approach of sustained mentoring and practical employment support is so crucial.

If you’re a North East employer ready to make a difference, or someone who needs our support, get in touch.
