This holiday season, Café 16 at HMP Northumberland received a beautiful new display fridge, generously funded by our partners at SSAFA. As seen in the accompanying photo, the fridge is now fully stocked with fresh pies, cakes, and other baked goods prepared by serving prisoners in our bakery.
The bakery provides job training and purpose for prisoners nearing the end of their sentences. Some of those working there are veterans. Government figures estimate that 5% of the UK’s incarcerated identify as former members of the military, though some believe the actual percentage is higher.
SSAFA’s support enables the bakery to upgrade its facilities. In doing so, we can help more inmates gain skills to find employment post-release, breaking the cycle of reoffending. The delicious treats now on full display in Café 16 also provide staff and visitors a small taste of the promising new beginnings these bakers can achieve when given the tools and opportunity.
We remain grateful to partners like SSAFA who make initiatives like the Café 16 bakery possible. If you are on a professional visit to HMP Northumberland, do please visit Café 16! We also sell a range of our products at our farm shop which is open to the public at the prison, and at our Café in Newcastle Cathedral.
