Seven Oswinners Qualify as Dry Stone Wallers

Congratulations to the 7 Oswin Project dry stone wallers who qualified today! They completed four days of intensive training and today took a 7-hour practical exam overseen and awarded by the Dry-Stone Walling Association.  The Oswin Project is rebuilding lives and walls one stone at a time and making sure our rural heritage is maintained for future generations.

The charity’s Inside and Out team arranged the training , volunteering, and mentoring of the Oswinners ( as we call our clients). All the participants have been involved in the criminal justice system . Our aim is to stop reoffending by building a purposeful future and so ensure there are fewer victims of crime.

The team honed their skills in rural Northumberland . Heritage crafts including dry-stone walling are declining across the country, and there is a great demand for those qualified in this ancient skill.

A course in self-employment is running in parallel with this training so the dry stone wallers will be fully equipped to take on heritage work in Northumberland and beyond !
